YAY for jdorama on philippine TV! May 2, 2006

finally! it’s about time that philippine tv gets a japanese drama! yay for GMA! yay for gokusen! Nakama Yukie as Yamaguchi Kumikowell, i don’t know if ABS already showed a jdorama before or if it’s planning on getting one soon. but it will be good if the bigwigs decides on a nice one, like strawberry on the shortcake or GTO. i hope nobody shows shinsengumi here because i won’t watch it. translating it to filipino will not do justice to the period drama it is. taiga drama like shinsengumi are meant to be watched in the original language because there are a lot of differences and nuances in old and new japanese. kind of what happened to jewel in the palace. i liked it, but the feeling just isn’t the same if it isn’t in korean. yeah, mamanyim.

anyway, i don’t really watch dramas but i love japanese dramas because of the unique stories. unlike the hackneyed love triangles (or squares??) we usually see on chinese or korean dramas (save for a few really good ones like jewel in the palace), japanese dramas usually touch on topics like family life, student life and professional life. a year ago, i was watching this drama on nhk about a grandfather reaching out to his daughter-in-law and grandchildren after his son dies. they had a bit of a falling out after the son marries the girl and they never spoke since. then he finds out about a life-threatening disease he has and decides to make amends with his son’s family. i think the english title was ’summer days with grandpa’ or something like that.

in the first episode, i thought gokusen was a little too GTO for me. but according to reviews, the only similarity the 2 drama/manga/anime have is the main character being the teacher for the most unruly class in the year. ;) this should be interesting!
